Rebuild Of Evangelion Asuka Langley

Rebuild Of Evangelion Asuka Langley

Okay, so picture this: me, crammed on a train, desperately trying to finish my bento before we hit the next station. Chopsticks flailing, seaweed sticking to my cheek…total chaos. And then, boom! The guy next to me is watching Rebuild of Evangelion. Specifically, Asuka going full berserk mode. And I’m thinking, “Yep, that pretty much sums up my mornings.”

It got me thinking about Asuka Langley Soryu (or Shikinami Langley in Rebuild, which, let’s be honest, still feels weird saying). She's arguably the most complex, frustrating, and ultimately, most fascinating character in the entire Eva universe. But Rebuild…Rebuild does something different with her, doesn’t it? It’s not just a simple rehash.

The original Asuka, well, she’s a mess. A brilliant, traumatized, incredibly prickly mess. Her issues stem from childhood trauma, a desperate need for validation, and a fear of abandonment that manifests as…well, total bossiness and verbal abuse. We see her unravel, piece by piece, as the series progresses. It’s heartbreaking.

Rebuild Asuka, on the surface, seems…almost…better adjusted? She’s still got the attitude, the fighting prowess, and the incredible ego (thank god, because that’s half the fun, right?). But there’s a subtle shift. Maybe it’s the eyepatch, maybe it's the slightly less intense baggage at the beginning. Either way, something feels different.

One of the biggest changes (and arguably one of the most controversial) is her role in the story. Instead of being a pivotal figure in the final act, like in End of Evangelion, she gets…sidelined. Sort of. She’s still important, don't get me wrong. Her relationship with Shinji is still crucial. But she's almost…preserved in a way. Is that good? Is that bad? The jury’s still out for me, honestly.

It’s like Anno and the gang looked at the original Asuka and thought, "Okay, how can we give her a slightly less soul-crushing fate?" And maybe they succeeded. Maybe. But at what cost? Does that sanitization, that slight softening of her edges, diminish her character?

And then there’s the whole clone theory. The fact that Rebuild Asuka is potentially a clone designed specifically for Evangelion piloting is…a lot to unpack. It adds another layer of tragedy to her already complicated existence. Think about it: she’s not just fighting for humanity, she’s potentially fighting for a purpose that was artificially imposed on her. Heavy stuff, huh?

Ultimately, Rebuild Asuka is a fascinating case study in character adaptation. She's recognizable, but different. Familiar, but subtly altered. She challenges us to re-evaluate what we thought we knew about Asuka Langley Soryu (or Shikinami). Did they improve her? Did they do her a disservice? Honestly, that's up for each of us to decide.

So, what are your thoughts? Team Original Asuka or Team Rebuild Asuka? Let's debate in the comments! I need to know if I'm alone in my confused, slightly conflicted feelings about this fiery redhead. After all, isn't that what fandom is all about?
