Week-end à La Rochelle En Famille

Ah, La Rochelle! Just saying the name conjures up images of sunshine, salty air, and happy families. We recently whisked the kids away for a weekend there, and let me tell you, it was magnifique. Thinking of doing the same? Let me share our little adventure, maybe it'll inspire you!
First things first: the harbour. It’s the heart of La Rochelle, buzzing with activity. Imagine colorful fishing boats bobbing gently, the impressive medieval towers standing guard... breathtaking, isn't it?
We spent ages just strolling along the quays, gawking at the yachts and dreaming of sailing away to faraway lands. The kids, of course, were fascinated by the street performers. A mime artist, a bubble show – you know, the usual suspects! But hey, it kept them entertained while we sipped our café au lait. Bliss!
Must Read
Now, you can’t go to La Rochelle without visiting the Aquarium. I mean, seriously, it's one of the biggest in Europe! Sharks, jellyfish, colorful fish I couldn't even name... the kids were absolutely mesmerized. Was it crowded? A little. But was it worth it? Absolutely!
We even got to see the feeding of the sharks! A little gruesome, maybe, but fascinating nonetheless. And you know what? I think I learned as much as the kids did.

Lunch was a crepe affair, naturally! There are countless little creperies dotted around the town, each one claiming to have the best. We found a charming little place tucked away on a side street, with outdoor seating and a view of... well, another building, but still! The kids devoured their Nutella crepes in record time. Who am I kidding, so did I!
After lunch, we decided to climb the Tour Saint-Nicolas. Talk about a workout! But the views from the top? Incroyable! You could see the whole city spread out before you, the islands in the distance, the Atlantic Ocean shimmering in the sun. It was definitely worth the climb (and the aching legs!).
Later that afternoon, we needed to wind down. So, what did we do? Headed to the beach, of course! Plage des Minimes is perfect for families. Soft sand, shallow water, and plenty of space to build sandcastles (which, let's be honest, I ended up building more than the kids did).

We splashed around in the water, collected seashells, and generally just enjoyed being together. It's those simple moments, isn't it, that you really cherish?
For dinner, we opted for some fresh seafood at a restaurant overlooking the harbour. Moules frites for me, fish and chips for the kids. Simple, but delicious. And as the sun set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, we felt a sense of contentment wash over us.

Sunday morning, we took a boat trip to Île d'Aix. A tiny, car-free island just a short ferry ride away. It's like stepping back in time. We rented bikes and explored the island's narrow lanes, discovering hidden beaches and charming little villages. Honestly, it was like something out of a postcard.
So, would I recommend a weekend in La Rochelle with the family? Absolutely! It's a charming city with something for everyone. Just remember to pack your sunscreen, your appetite, and your sense of adventure! You won't regret it. It's the perfect place to create lasting memories.
And you know what the best part was? Seeing the smiles on the kids' faces. That's what makes it all worthwhile, right? À bientôt, La Rochelle!
