Shinsekai Yori. Just the name evokes images of a serene, yet unsettling, future. The first episode, dubbed in French (Vostfr Hd!), immediately throws you into a world both beautiful and menacing. We are introduced to Saki and her friends, children seemingly carefree, yet living under unspoken rules.

The animation is stunning. The idyllic landscapes clash jarringly with the underlying tension. You feel the unease, the pressure of the unseen forces shaping their lives. Think of the scenes by the river, the children playing, the shadows lengthening – it's all meticulously crafted to create an atmosphere of impending doom.

However, and this is where my controversial opinion comes in: Shinsekai Yori is tragically overrated. While the potential for a truly groundbreaking series is evident from the first episode, the pacing is agonizingly slow. We’re shown glimpses of the darkness, the societal control, the 'monsters' lurking in the periphery, but it's all teased and stretched out, demanding an almost unreasonable level of patience from the viewer.

Yes, the world-building is impressive. The social commentary, while subtle, is definitely present. The mysteries surrounding the Tainted Cats and the missing children are genuinely intriguing. But the initial impact, that wow factor, is dulled by the deliberate, almost glacial, pace. We spend too much time observing seemingly mundane moments when the series needs a jolt of narrative momentum.

So, while Shinsekai Yori clearly possesses undeniable artistic merit, its snail-paced storytelling diminishes its overall impact. It’s like being presented with a beautifully wrapped gift, only to find that the box is mostly empty. Beautiful to look at, but ultimately, a bit of a disappointment. The Vostfr Hd quality only emphasizes the beauty, not the narrative flaws.
