The animation, let's be honest, shows its age. But the core of the episode – the introduction of magic and science clashing – still holds up. Seeing Touma stumble into this world, armed with nothing but his Imagine Breaker and a healthy dose of good intentions, is classic shonen.

It establishes the stakes. A girl with a library of forbidden knowledge. A city brimming with Espers. An impending conflict that could shatter the world. High stakes, indeed.

But here's the thing: it's wildly overrated.

Look, I appreciate the world-building. I genuinely do. The initial concept of magic versus science is compelling. But that first episode... it feels clunky. The exposition dump is heavy-handed. The dialogue often feels forced. And Index's character, initially, is almost unbearably annoying. Her constant demands for food border on caricature, and her reactions to danger, while understandable, grate after the fifth time.

The pacing is also a major issue. It throws a lot at you at once, assuming you're already familiar with the light novels. If you're not, prepare to be confused.

While the potential of Index is evident from the beginning, this episode needed a serious rewrite. Other anime introductions manage to hook you immediately. Index S1 01 feels more like homework than entertainment. It promises a fantastical journey, but the journey starts with a slog.

There are definitely elements to appreciate. Touma's selflessness shines through. But the flaws are too glaring to ignore. Sorry, Index fans. Je ne suis pas convaincu.
